First and foremost, you want to discover your true motivation? Why do I want to learn Spanish or French? What drives me forward? What are you hoping to get out of this?
If you want to make new friends, spend an amazing time in Europe, or simply gain access to more job opportunities, than Spanish is just perfect for you. Over 500 million people worldwide speak Spanish as their native language.
We’re talking here about the vast majority of Latin America, Spain, and dozens of islands and archipelagos. Even in the US, tens of millions of people already speak this language.
Of course, French is also quite widespread, as millions of people in Africa and on several islands speak this language. Even half of Canadians or millions of people in Switzerland and Belgium speak it.
However, Spanish has an edge, because it allows you to communicate with more people and advance in your career quicker. Worldwide, Spanish speakers can get better positions than French speakers.
2. Difficulty level
When you’re asking yourself if “should I learn French or Spanish?”, you should also consider the difficulty level. Learning a new language takes time. If for example you know some Spanish words by watching Spanish movies on Netflix (“Casa de Papel” fans here we come), you should probably go with Spanish. Ola, Bueno, or Pero are extremely simple words.
If you also know some Portuguese or you want to learn this language, Spanish is the closest to it. By learning one, you’ll quickly be able to learn the other.
Conversely, French is slightly more difficult and requires more advanced grammar skills. French grammar is extremely difficult compared to English or Spanish grammar, make no mistake about it.
3. Location
The last aspect you want to consider when determining which language to learn is your current location and travel plans. For example, if you live in Canada, you probably already know French. If not, you should focus on learning it.
If you live in the US or South America, you want to learn Spanish, because most of the people around you know it.
If you live in Eastern Europe or Asia, you would probably want to learn Spanish, because it can give you more opportunities to connect with like-minded people.
